The Futuro Media Group seeks a highly skilled and experienced non-profit management media executive who will help to shape and guide the organization’s strategic vision and long-term sustainability and growth as Executive Director (ED). The ED will oversee all aspects of the organization’s operations and insure its financial sustainability, in particular institutional funding and major gifts, in the midst of a dynamic and changing media landscape.

Futuro Media is an independent, nonprofit news media organization committed to authentic, humanizing storytelling, and journalism committed to covering issues impacting race, gender, culture, and class. Founded in 2010 by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, Futuro Media shifts paradigms and creates narrative change by elevating voices. Our organization is committed to building a newsroom, which looks like the communities we cover by covering race, culture, class via intersectionality and intentionality.

Futuro Media produces Peabody Award-winning Latino USA, public radio’s only national Latino news and cultural weekly radio program; In The Thick, a politics podcast from the perspective of journalists of color; and Latino Rebels, a pioneering digital news outlet that reaches millions through its website, radio programming, and podcasts. Futuro Studios produces original podcast series such as Suave, La Brega, LOUD: The History of Reggaeton and more; and Futuro Unidad Hinojosa (FUH), a unit within Futuro Media, is focused on investigative journalism and special projects.

Reporting to the Board of Directors and working closely with Futuro Media’s senior leadership team, the ED will spearhead all development, marketing, finance, administration, human resources, operations, and engineering efforts overseeing the following areas of responsibility: day-to-day management of the non-profit, financial stewardship including budgeting and accounting functions, administrative and HR functions, communications, development strategy, marketing and partnership relationships, operations, engineering services, and legal affairs. The ED will be expected to build operational capacity and develop and implement a business strategy that creates a sustainable business model for Futuro Media.

The ideal candidate has achieved success as a non-profit leader and media professional and is ready to assume responsibility for the overall operation of a growing, and innovative media non-profit. The ED must be comfortable in an entrepreneurial environment; have senior-level administrative experience in a non-profit, media, broadcasting, and/or digital media setting; possess an exceptionally high level of personal responsibility; and be comfortable managing back-end processes, including creating strategic partnerships, engaging with donors, negotiating contracts, and shaping and implementing short/long-range plans in a fast-paced environment. The ED will lead a team of people with diverse skills and must be adept at staff leadership and mentorship, culturally competent, and capable of integrating smoothly into a diverse office culture.

The Executive Director will be responsible for:

  • Refining and implementing an annual strategic plan and fundraising strategy for achieving fundraising goals, in collaboration with the Board of Directors
  • Functioning as a visible, effective, and well-respected brand ambassador and spokesperson representing The Futuro Media Group externally to media, partners, donors, and the wider business and non-profit community
  • Building and managing financial plans, budgets, and operational systems in line with the strategic plan; setting and directing financial and operational priorities with input from the senior leadership team
  • Providing direct oversight of the leaders of the Development/Marketing, Finance, Admin/HR, and Engineering departments, and ensuring Futuro has the staffing needed in these departments as the organization grows
  • Overseeing development and fundraising efforts, including securing and growing institutional funders, major gifts, and individual donors, cultivating new revenue streams, developing and maintaining strategic relationships with distribution partners, funding sources, and donors
  • Overseeing the implementation of a communications/marketing plan for maximum impact and visibility
  • Financial stewardship, including overseeing finance and accounting systems, cash flow, annual audit, and budget management processes consistent with the needs of a non-profit organization, and in compliance with 501c3 laws and regulations
  • Overseeing management of administrative and human resources systems and processes to shape and build a dynamic and friendly workplace culture consistent with Futuro’s mission and values
  • Implementing best practices in staff development, benefits, and compensation, with a focus on employee mentorship and retention
  • Overseeing engineering services for all in-house media properties including radio and podcast series
  • Ensuring clear structures and policies to streamline communication and execution of administrative, financial, development, and engineering duties with all media properties, and in particular Studios and FUH
  • Managing contract negotiations with vendors, consultants, and contractors
  • Managing internal office operations, including overseeing the purchase and maintenance of leases, office equipment, IT systems, etc.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving challenges as needed

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Understanding of current trends in public, commercial, and digital media
  • Media management experience preferred; experience in journalism a plus
  • Experience working collaboratively with and reporting to the Board of Directors
  • Exceptional relationship building, communication and
    collaboration skills between internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with proven ability to focus, prioritize, and implement
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills: can speak compellingly about the organization, its mission, and its goals
  • Knowledge of Spanish language a plus
  • Remote or NYC based

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Starting salary is $185,000 to $200,000, commensurate with experience. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
